  1. Netherlands Tourist Visa – Proper Application Steps from India
  2. For an Indian resident travelling to the Netherlands for tourism, you normally need a Schengen short-stay visa (Type C). The application is submitted through VFS Global in India, while the visa decision is made by the Dutch authorities.
  3. Step 1 – Check the Correct Schengen Country
  4. Before applying, confirm that the Netherlands is the correct country to apply through.
  5. If the Netherlands is your main destination, apply for a Netherlands Schengen visa.
  6. If visiting several Schengen countries, apply to the country responsible under the Schengen main-destination rules.
  7. Do not simply choose the Netherlands because it is your first country of entry if another Schengen country is actually your main destination.
  8. Step 2 – Check Your Passport
  9. Your passport should:
  10. Be issued within the last 10 years
  11. Have at least 2 blank visa pages
  12. Remain valid for at least 3 months after leaving the Schengen Area
  13. Be signed
  14. Include copies of the bio-data page and, for Indian nationals, the last page
  15. Include previous Schengen visas/stamps where applicable
  16. Step 3 – Complete the Netherlands Schengen Application Form
  17. The application form is completed online through the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal.
  18. You need to:
  19. Create an account.
  20. Enter your email address.
  21. Verify your email.
  22. Select the Short-stay Schengen visa.

  25. Provide employment/business information.

  74. Step 5 – Prepare a Strong Cover Letter
  75. The cover letter should clearly explain:
  76. Applicant details → Purpose of visit → Travel dates → Places to visit → Accommodation → Travel arrangements → Who will pay → Employment/business → Financial capability → Reasons for returning to India.
  77. The Netherlands specifically asks for a cover letter explaining the reason for the visit, duration, fellow travellers where applicable, transportation and accommodation.
  78. Step 6 – Arrange Travel Medical Insurance
  79. The insurance should:
  80. Be in the applicant's name
  81. Cover the entire Schengen Area
  82. Cover the complete period of stay
  83. Provide at least €30,000 medical coverage
  84. Include emergency medical treatment/hospitalisation and repatriation requirements
  85. Step 7 – Book the VFS Appointment
  86. Once the documents are ready, book an appointment with VFS Global.
  87. Applications for the Netherlands can be submitted at VFS centres in:
  88. Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Hyderabad, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune and New Delhi.

  90. The Dutch government advises applicants to book the appointment themselves rather than using an intermediary.
  91. Step 8 – Attend the VFS Appointment
  92. On the appointment date:
  93. Reach VFS on time.
  94. Carry your original passport.
  95. Carry the completed and signed application form.
  96. Carry the complete supporting-document file.
  97. Carry the required checklist.
  98. Submit your documents.
  99. Provide fingerprints/biometrics if required.
  100. Answer questions about your proposed trip if asked.
  101. Pay the applicable visa fee and VFS service charges.
  102. Choose passport collection/delivery.
  103. Keep your VFS receipt and reference number.
  104. Applicants generally need to appear personally, and fingerprints are taken from applicants aged 12 or older, subject to applicable rules.
  105. Step 9 – Application Processing
  106. After submission, the application is forwarded for processing by the Dutch authorities.
  107. They may:

  110. Invite you for an interview
  111. Verify information provided in the application
  112. VFS currently states an average processing time of 25 calendar days, with a maximum of 45 calendar days.
  113. Therefore, avoid making non-refundable travel arrangements based solely on an expected processing date.
  114. Step 10 – Track Your Application
  115. Use the VFS reference number received at the time of submission to track your application online.
  116. Step 11 – Passport Collection / Delivery
  117. When processing is completed, VFS will notify you.
  118. You can:
  119. Collect your passport from VFS, or
  120. Use the available passport-delivery service.
  121. The notification itself does not necessarily tell you whether the visa was approved. You need to receive/check the passport to see the decision.
  122. Step 12 – Check the Visa Sticker
  123. If approved, immediately check:
  124. Name
  125. Passport number
  126. Visa validity
  127. Number of entries
  128. Duration of stay
  129. Validity/territorial information
  130. If there is an error, contact the Dutch authorities promptly.
  131. Step 13 – Travel to the Netherlands
  132. A Schengen visa allows a stay of up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the actual validity and duration granted on your visa.
